Il ne faut pas oublier ce qu’on lui doit et l’impression qu’il a du donner en son temps, en développant le «rhythm and blues» et en y apportant des éléments distinctifs de ce qui deviendra le «rock ‘n’ roll» : des paroles axées sur la vie adolescente, le consumérisme ainsi qu’une musique donnant la part belle aux solos de guitare et à la mise en scène de son interprète – autant d’éléments qui exerceront une influence majeure sur la musique rock subséquente.
