Wolfgang Muthspiel en bref
Il apprend le violon à l’âge de six ans et à quatorze ans il choisi la guitare classique. Grâce à une bourse d’étude il intègre le prestigieux Berklee College of Music.
À partir de 1985 Wolfgang Muthspiel enregistre trois albums avec son frère Christian puis un premier album solo, Timezones, en 1989.
Il part en tournée pendant deux ans avec le vibraphoniste Gary Burton et le guitariste Mick Goodrick, l’un de ses professeurs à Berklee.
Au cours des années 1990, Wolfgang Muthspiel vit à New York et enregistre d’autres albums solo comme The Promise, Black and Blue et In and Out en 1993, Loaded, Like New en 1995 et Perspective en 1996.
Il travaille également avec Don Alias, Larry Grenadier, Tom Harrell et Kenny Wollesen. En tant que sideman Wolfgang Muthspiel apparaît sur des albums de Patricia Barber, Marc Johnson, Paul Motian et Gary Peacock.
En 1997 Il est récompensé par le prix du meilleur musicien de jazz autrichien de l’année.
En 2000 Wolfgang Muthspiel fonde son propre label, Material Records et enregistre à nouveau avec son frère Christian et la chanteuse norvégienne Rebekka Bakken.
Par ailleurs, Wolfgang Muthspiel fonde plusieurs trios :
